Asphalt or Concrete: Which Driveway Holds Up in Erie?
We pave in asphalt, so take this for what it is, but here's the real tradeoff between the two for a climate like ours.
People ask us whether they should go asphalt or concrete, and I'll be upfront: we install asphalt, so I'm not a neutral party. But I've seen both hold up and fail around here for years, and the honest version is that each one has a real case. Which is right depends on your budget and how you feel about a few tradeoffs.
Cost and speed
Asphalt is usually the cheaper of the two to install, often by a good margin, and it goes down faster. You can typically drive on a new asphalt driveway within a few days. Concrete costs more up front and needs a longer cure before it takes traffic. For a lot of homeowners the price difference alone settles it.
How they handle our winters
This is where the Erie climate actually matters. Asphalt flexes a little with the freeze-thaw, which helps it ride out the constant expanding and contracting we get all winter. It also melts snow a bit faster because the dark surface pulls in heat. The catch is that asphalt needs maintenance, sealing and crack filling, to keep water out of it over the years.
Concrete is rigid and lasts a long time when it's done right, but rigid is a problem with freeze-thaw. It can crack, and the bigger issue here is road salt. Salt is rough on concrete surfaces and causes them to spall, that flaking you see on older concrete. In a place that salts as hard as we do all winter, that's a real consideration. Asphalt doesn't have that problem with salt.
Upkeep and looks
Concrete asks for less routine maintenance and gives you more options for finish and color if the look matters to you. Asphalt is the plain black driveway, and it needs a sealcoat every few years to stay in good shape. Some people like that asphalt maintenance is cheap and simple. Others would rather pay more once and think about it less. Both are reasonable ways to look at it.
So which one
If budget is the driver, you want it usable fast, and you don't mind sealing it now and then, asphalt is hard to beat here, and the salt tolerance is a genuine plus in our climate. If you're set on a particular look, plan to stay in the house a long time, and don't want the routine upkeep, concrete has its case.
